Senior Photos in the Puget Sound: A Parent and Student Guide

When to book high school senior portraits in Tacoma, Seattle, and the rest of the Puget Sound — plus locations, outfits, weather planning, and what you should get back.
Book earlier than you think
Most Washington high schools want yearbook portraits submitted in the fall, and the best light of the year runs from late June through early October. That means the calendar fills from the outside in: summer evenings go first, then the golden weeks of September.
If your student is a senior this year, aim to book in late spring for a summer session. If you are reading this in September, there is still room — the light after the first rains is beautiful, we just plan differently.
Locations around the Sound
The Puget Sound gives you three very different looks within a short drive. Waterfront and mountain backdrops — Point Defiance, Ruston Way, Chambers Bay, Gig Harbor's marina — read open and cinematic. Urban brick, murals, and glass in downtown Tacoma or Seattle's Capitol Hill and Georgetown read modern and editorial. Forest and field — Point Defiance's interior trails, Puyallup farmland, the trails above Federal Way — read warm and classic.
Most sessions pick two locations that contrast. A third rarely adds variety; it mostly adds drive time.
Outfits: three is the right number
Bring three looks: one everyday outfit that looks like your student, one dressed-up look for the frames grandparents will frame, and one that shows what they actually do — the jersey, the instrument, the apron, the robotics jacket, the ranch boots.
Solid colors and simple textures hold up better than logos and busy prints. Layers matter here: even in August, waterfront evenings turn cold fast.
Planning around Washington weather
Overcast is not a problem — a soft gray sky is a giant softbox and it flatters skin. Sideways rain is a problem, so every session we book carries a no-fee reschedule for genuinely unshootable weather.
The best hour is the last one before sunset. From June to September that is late; we plan the start time backward from sunset rather than picking a round number.
What families should get back
A yearbook-ready file cropped and sized to your school's specification, full-resolution edited images licensed for personal printing, and web-sized versions for social profiles and graduation announcements. Ask for the announcement layout up front if you want one designed — it is far cheaper as part of the session than as a separate project later.

Bring a friend, and bring water
Sessions go better when someone your student likes is holding the extra jacket. A parent, a sibling, or a best friend keeps the mood loose, and loose is what makes portraits look like a person instead of a pose.
